What a way to start the new year!

What a way to start the new year… rain symbolises luck and blessings in Rwandan culture, but what we had at Wilderness Sabyinyo was more than just rain. For the first time here we had snowfall. It was more than entertaining to see our guests and staff creating the first snowman for Sabyinyo which gave extra meaning to January – Mutarama in Kinyarwanda – with our sundowners aptly named Igitaramo (the show).  

 

It’s always amazing to see how quickly the weather can change from big storms to beautiful sunshine. This helped the vegetation to quickly recover from the snow, which in the end invited golden monkeys to Sabyinyo at the same time as our sheep were grazing on the fresh grass.

Our activities include nature trails, a flower and vegetable garden tour, and most importantly the authentic Sabyinyo village tour, which brings our guests and the community together, creating magical experiences for both.

 

One of the many interesting characters our guests can meet is the local traditional healer in the village, Shyirambere Etienne. He uses his knowledge of local plants and herbs to make remedies for flu, malaria, stomach cramps and headaches, and is a wealth of information for those who seek expertise in these matters.

 

 

Staff

 

New Year’s Eve is known to be a big party in Rwandan households. Our staff's New Year’s Eve couldn’t have been better, as we came together and had the most beautiful, shared evening with traditional dancing and a barbecue to count down to the new year.

 

As we continue discovering our Wilderness sister properties, we were happy to receive both Rachel and Charles from Magashi. A lot was exchanged during their time here, including new cocktails for our sundowners list, and a lot of massage training.

Sabyinyo bees are abuzz

Our Sabyinyo beekeeper, Samuel Nsanzimana, is becoming the real highlight for our guests to meet and interact with. They enjoy watching beehives being made by hand, and tasting the local honey that comes from Sabyinyo village.
