June was a month of momentum, collaboration, and celebration. From unforgettable wildlife encounters and meaningful community connections to exciting culinary developments and emotional farewells, there was no shortage of memorable moments. As we look back on the month, we are filled with gratitude for the experiences shared, the people who made them possible, and the exciting season that lies ahead.

One of the greatest privileges of what we do is witnessing the life-changing moments our guests experience during their stay. June was filled with many of these moments, reminding us why this part of the world holds such a special place in people's hearts.

The early mornings have continued to be magical. Long before the sun fully rises, guests set off with anticipation written across their faces. There is something uniquely exciting about heading into the forest knowing that every step brings the possibility of an extraordinary encounter.

The journey itself is often as memorable as the destination. Guests navigate winding trails, cross through breathtaking landscapes, and immerse themselves in the sounds and scents of the forest. Then comes the moment everyone hopes for, the first glimpse of a gorilla family.

For many, it is difficult to put into words – the sight of a silverback calmly watching over his family, playful juveniles tumbling through the vegetation, or a mother gently caring for her infant. These create memories that linger long after the trek has ended. Time and again, guests have described the experience as one of the most profound and life-defining moments of their lives. What makes these encounters even more remarkable is the journey required to find them. Every trek is different, every forest path its own adventure, requiring patience, and delivering wonder.

While the morning treks continue to create unforgettable memories, June's afternoons offered guests a wonderful opportunity to slow down and discover the many other treasures our region has to offer. Birdwatching around the lodge has been particularly rewarding this season, with an increase in bird activity bringing vibrant colours and beautiful melodies to our gardens and surrounding forest. Guests have enjoyed leisurely walks, often spotting an impressive variety of species right from the property.

Our community visits have also continued to be a guest favourite. These experiences provide meaningful connections with local people, traditions, and culture, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of life in the region. From cultural performances to sharing stories and learning traditional practices, these visits become some of the most memorable and enriching moments of our guests' journeys.

June also delivered an exciting development behind the scenes of our dining experience. We were delighted to welcome Nathalie and Gordon, who joined us to amplify our amazing food offering. Bringing extensive experience and knowledge of both hospitality and local culinary traditions, they worked closely with our culinary team to refine and elevate our menus.

In a collaboration with our chefs, some thoughtful menu development, and a focus on storytelling through food, we have been able to strengthen the connection between our cuisine and the culture that surrounds us. Each dish is now even more reflective of our heritage, local ingredients, and guest experience. The result is a dining experience that goes beyond simply enjoying a meal, it becomes an opportunity to taste the stories, traditions, and flavors of our region.

The impact of their work is already being felt, and we are excited to continue this culinary evolution throughout the season.

July marked a powerful milestone for our community partners at SACOLA, who officially handed over 12 newly built homes to vulnerable families in the Kinigi and Nyange sectors. Funded through tourism revenue generated by Wilderness Sabyinyo and its guests, the project reflects the positive impact that conservation and responsible tourism can have on neighbouring communities.

The homes, delivered fully equipped with essential household furnishings and supplies, provide safety, comfort, and dignity to the beneficiary families. Local leaders and community members gathered to celebrate the handover, highlighting the continued success of the partnership between SACOLA and Wilderness Sabyinyo.

This initiative serves as a meaningful reminder that every guest visit contributes to creating opportunities beyond the lodge, supporting both community development and the long-term protection of Volcanoes National Park.

As occupancy increased and peak season arrived in full force, every department came together with renewed enthusiasm and dedication. From housekeeping to food and beverage, maintenance, security and maintenance, the collective effort of the team ensured that every guest experience remained exceptional.

The excitement of the season has been contagious. There is a wonderful sense of purpose around Sabyinyo, with colleagues supporting one another, celebrating achievements, and embracing the challenges and rewards that come with welcoming guests from around the world.

While June brought many reasons to celebrate, it also marked the end of an important chapter in our journey. This month, we gathered as a team to say farewell to our General Manager, Eric, after four incredible years of leadership, growth, and shared success.

The farewell celebration was a heartfelt reflection of the impact he has had on all of us. Colleagues came together for an afternoon of laughter, memories, speeches, drinks, cake, thoughtful gifts, and more than a few tears.

As we reflected on the past four years, it became clear just how much had been achieved under Eric's leadership. Through challenges, successes, and countless memorable moments, he consistently inspired the team to grow, improve, and strive for excellence.

The stories shared during the celebration highlighted not only his professional contributions but also the relationships he built along the way. There was an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the guidance, encouragement, and support he provided to so many members of the team.

Although we were sad to say goodbye, we could not be more excited for his next adventure. Eric has taken on the role of Magashi Concession Manager, a position we wholeheartedly believe he is destined to excel in. His passion, commitment, and leadership have always shone through, and we have no doubt that he will bring the same energy and vision to this exciting new opportunity.

On behalf of the entire team, we extend our deepest thanks and warmest wishes to Eric. We are grateful for everything he has contributed over the past four years and look forward to celebrating his continued success in the future.
