Wilderness Busanga Bush Camp newsletter – June 2026

The birdlife is amazing as usual, and early on the water level was high, hence we were using our Go-Devil boat as our primary mode of transport, which got us really close to the aquatic wildlife.

June is winter in the Busanga Plains, and it can get really cold, with the temperatures dropping to as low as 5° Celsius.

The season started on a good note with guests geared to see the wildlife in the beautiful green plains of the Busanga. It has been really rewarding to see how the cubs have grown. The prides in the Busanga Plains have increased quickly due to the abundance of food here, and the population has tripled from last year.

Our June guests enjoyed early morning drives to catch glimpses of kills, as the lions are active around dawn. Our guests also enjoy their morning bush TV – the camp fire, as we like to call it – and sitting or standing around the fire, capturing the sunrise over a cup of tea or coffee and enjoying traditionally toasted bread over the fire before heading out is a treasured morning ritual. It is truly memorable for them, because where some come from it’s rare to see and experience moments like we have in the Busanga Plains.

Later in the day, we offer our guests a special brunch at our pool area where we serve a mini buffet created by our able chef Lemon and his team. 

In terms of activities and wildlife sightings, I must say it’s been really exciting this early in the season to see how the lion families are battling it out for territory. We have had guests returning to camp confirming sightings of 22 to 25 lions in one place – I believe this is rare indeed.

The cheetahs and leopard were seen numerous times too – we at Busanga Bush Camp have one leopard that is resident around camp, as it is seen by staff time and again, while the three Nkala cheetah boys are regularly seen marking their territory too. 

It’s always exciting for us in camp to hear stories of how amazed our guests are to be here, and most of them say they feel like they are reconnecting with nature once more. 

Out on activities, guests appreciate the fantastic scenery at the Hippo Pool, where they see dramatic displays of hippos in the water while they are having a sundowner. The Eagle’s Nest is also another great sundowner spot to observe impressive numbers of hippos and crocodiles.

Monica Kangwa Mubita has joined our team as Assistant Manager – she comes with several years’ experience in the industry, and has been at management level for some time. Apart from Monica, the winning team has not changed, and we are well geared for the season ahead.
