Wilderness Magashi Newsletter – May 2025

After fewer leopard sightings in April, May surprised us with six encounters in just four consecutive days, four of which involved kills. This level of activity is rare, making it a thrilling time for Magashi guests.

One unforgettable moment unfolded during a night drive. A flash of green eyes in the distance signaled something special. Upon closer approach, a leopard was seen stalking an impala. The chase began, disappearing into the thickets. The guide switched off the engine to listen, and soon the struggle was heard. A hyena emerged victorious, dragging the impala – yet the leopard was not far behind. In a remarkable display of scavenging strategy, it retrieved parts of the carcass, including what appeared to be the lungs, displaying the complex predator dynamics of the bush.

Another memorable sighting involved a young female lioness feeding on a baby hippo carcass near the marsh. As temperatures climbed, she moved her kill into the shade. Moments later, a hyena appeared, attempting to steal the meal. What followed was intense: the lioness dropped the carcass and charged, catching the hyena and breaking its leg. It was a visceral, powerful moment, offering a raw glimpse into predator interactions and survival in the wild.

While predator drama unfolded across the concession, May also brought heartwarming news. Mahoro, one of Magashi’s most iconic lionesses, has given birth to three cubs. During a brief and respectful observation, our guides were able to determine the gender of two — one male and one female. The third cub remained too well hidden to confirm. We eagerly await their first appearance in the open and look forward to the new chapter they will add to Akagera’s growing lion legacy.

Beyond the wildlife, May was also a month of professional enrichment for our team. Magashi had the privilege of hosting three esteemed members of the Wilderness24 team: Dr. King, Malora, and Bruce.

• Dr. King conducted vital first aid refresher training, grounding the team in practical, scenario-based skills relevant to our remote location.
• Malora, Head of Risk, led sessions on the importance of accurate reporting and internal communication. She also helped deepen our understanding of how Wilderness24 operates as a network of dedicated roles and responsibilities.
• Bruce, representing Wilderness Aviation, shared insights into how aviation logistics ensure safety and support across the region.

This visit strengthened our knowledge, enhanced safety awareness, and deepened our sense of belonging within the greater Wilderness family.

May at Magashi was filled with moments that reminded us of nature’s power, fragility, and wonder. From rare leopard encounters and dramatic predator interactions to the joy of lion cubs and team growth, every day brought something new.

As we move into June and the heart of the dry season, we carry these stories with us, grateful for our guests, proud of our team, and excited for what lies ahead.
