Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go on a self-drive safari in Namibia?

Self-drive safaris are available year-round in Namibia – the alluring landscapes, vast open spaces and low-density tourism are not affected by seasons, just be sure to pack for the weather as summers can be very hot and winter nights decidedly chilly. No matter when you decide to go, plan a self-drive itinerary that lasts 10 to 14 days as a minimum, allowing you to see as much of the country as possible. This allows enough time to cover meaningful distances without rushing, while still leaving space for rest in between often very long drives.

Is self-driving safe in Namibia?

Yes, before your trip begins, we can equip you with all the knowledge you need for a smooth and safe adventure. Pre-trip briefings cover driving conditions across varied terrain, wildlife etiquette, border crossing procedures, and general safety guidance. These sessions ensure you feel confident navigating Namibia’s particularly remote areas, understanding local regulations, and respecting both wildlife and communities.

We can also help guide you on hire cars, fuel planning, and emergency kits so you’re never caught unprepared, and most car hire companies offer manual and automatic options. Whether hiring through one of our partners or using your own car, our advice and preparation protocols help guarantee that your vehicle is ready for the demands of off-road travel. Additionally, staying safe in remote areas is all about communication. We can help guide you when it comes to satellite phones, GPS tracking, and clear emergency procedures so you’re never out of reach. Our teams are trained to respond swiftly if needed, and Wilderness24 is available around the clock to co-ordinate assistance.

Do I need 4x4 experience?

A high-clearance 4x4 designed to handle gravel and sandy roads is essential, although 4x4 experience is not essential when driving Namibia’s well maintained main country roads. Just be sure you have a few spare tyres handy and the know-how to change a wheel. Once you arrive at our camps, game drives are led by expert guides in specialised vehicles, allowing you to fully relax and enjoy the wildlife. And for the more remote northern camps like Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp or Serra Cafema, seamless fly-in options are available with vehicle collection from us included, for stress-free access to our most remote camps.

What happens if the vehicle breaks down?

When you book your journey with Wilderness, you can rest assured that we have a dedicated support network on hand to assist should the need arise. Whether it’s a simple query or unexpected situation such as a vehicle breakdown, help is within reach with 24-hour assistance, emergency response, and on-the-ground expertise.
