Kulala Desert Lodge

The dunes of Sossusvlei in Namibia’s Namib Sand Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site are some of the most photographed in the world, known for their impressive orange and red hue. This magnificent colour comes from iron mixed in with the sand, which oxidises or rusts over time. The more vibrant the dune, the older it is. And the dunes here are around 5 million years old!

Sossusvlei is easily accessible by road from Swakopmund or Windhoek. However, the best and quickest way to reach this remote part of Namibia is on a light aircraft with Wilderness Air, where you will get to appreciate the true beauty of the desert from above. The Sossusvlei dunes, part of the UNESCO Namib Sand Sea, are accessed via our private-use, early access gate into Namib-Naukluft National Park. 

Sossusvlei, famous for its towering sand dunes, is located in south-western Namibia in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest conservation site in Namibia.

During your stay at our Namibian desert lodge, you will find plenty of activities to fill your day. See the stunning scenery and wildlife of the area on a guided drive or nature walk, venture across the plains on an eco-friendly electric fatbike, enjoy excursions to nearby Sesriem Canyon, hot-air balloon over the dunes for an incredible bird’s-eye view, indulge in sundowners overlooking the enormous gravel plains, or have a picnic under the stars.

There are numerous options for travellers looking to lay down their weary heads in Sossusvlei. Our two camps, Wilderness Kulula Desert Lodge and Wilderness Little Kulala, are the closest to the iconic red dunes of Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei.

You’ll explore Sossusvlei on foot so be sure to bring some sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. There also isn’t much shade so wear something airy and light in colour to keep cool and bring along plenty of sunblock and a good hat.

Kulala Desert Lodge is Wilderness' 21-room base camp for exploring the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the iconic Sossusvlei dune fields. Set on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve bordering the park, it offers direct access to the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei – the most photographed landscape in Namibia – with a lower price point than sibling property Little Kulala. The lodge includes Wilderness Air access to the private Kulala Airstrip, inside the reserve and much closer to the dunes than the public Sesriem gate.

Kulala Desert Lodge is situated on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, which shares a boundary with Namib-Naukluft National Park – the park that contains Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. The lodge's private Kulala Airstrip provides access directly inside the reserve, dramatically cutting travel time to the dunes compared to public access. Guests are at the dune face for sunrise — the optimal time for photography and walking – without the early-morning drive from Sesriem that most visitors face.

Kulala Desert Lodge has 21 rooms (including two family units), and is the larger, more affordable Sossusvlei camp. Little Kulala has 11 tented suites and is the premium option, with a more exclusive feel, and a higher price point. Both camps share the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve and access to the Sossusvlei dunes in Namib-Naukluft National Park. While the Kulala Desert Lodge rooms have flat rooftops where you can enjoy a sleep-out under the stars, Little Kulala offers roll-out beds that can be moved onto your deck. Kulala Desert Lodge has an inviting pool in the main area, while Little Kulala’s rooms each have a private plunge pool. The choice is primarily about camp atmosphere and budget: Kulala Desert Lodge for value and space; Little Kulala for intimacy and luxury.

Signature activities include climbing Sossusvlei’s Big Daddy Dune and exploring the petrified trees of Deadvlei. The camp also offers nature drives across the Kulala Reserve, star gazing (Namibia has some of Africa's clearest skies), hot air balloon flights over the Namib (bookable in advance), and guided walks in Sesriem Canyon. 

Sossusvlei is best in the cooler months (May to September), when dawn temperatures are comfortable for dune climbing and wildlife is more active. Midsummer (December to February) can be extremely hot, with dune temperatures exceeding 60°C on the surface. The green season (February to April) follows rare rain events, when the desert flowers briefly — one of Namibia's most unexpected natural spectacles. The camp is open year-round.
