Best time for a safari in South Africa

This is winter in the country and in most of its wildlife reserves, including Kruger National Park, winters are dry, causing vegetation to thin and wildlife to congregate around water sources, making sightings easier. If your priority is ticking off the Big 5 and seeing as many animals as possible this is the best time to visit South Africa. Additionally, cooler temperatures also mean more comfortable daytime game drives and fewer insects.

The opposite season, November to March, offers a completely different experience. This is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, which brings rain to many of South Africa’s safari areas, transforming the landscapes with lush greenery. This is the best time for birdwatching as many seasonal migrants arrive with the rains, while dramatic skies and thunderstorms provide atmospheric scenery for photography, and newborn animals abound, which can make for thrilling predator sightings. If you’re looking to combine a trip to Cape Town with your South African safari then this is also the best time to visit as summer in the Cape is hot and dry, meaning ideal conditions for the beach and pool. 

The transitional months of April and October, are known as shoulder seasons and offer good game viewing without peak-season crowds. They can also offer better value for money, if you time your trip right to avoid the Easter period, half-term breaks and the local South African school holidays. 

South Africa in November-February (summer season)

December to February is the best time to visit South Africa if want to combine a safari with Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and even the Garden Route. While the safari regions in the north of the country experience their summer rainfall, game drives can still be rewarding, especially for birders and photographers, with migratory species arriving and the bush alive with colour and dramatic, thunderstorm-filled skies. Although the vegetation is denser than in winter, experienced guides can still deliver memorable sightings. 

You may however decide to safari instead in the Karoo or Garden Route areas, where days are warmer and drier during the summer months. The long sunny days are also perfect for exploring Cape Town's beaches, hiking and walking, visiting the Cape Peninsula and enjoying the scenery of South Africa’s southern reaches. For travellers wanting the ultimate South African holiday that combines safari with the sea, wine regions and outdoor adventures, the summer months are a fantastic choice. 

It's the country's busiest travel period, however, particularly from mid-December to early January during the festive season and South African school holidays. Popular attractions, beaches and accommodation book up well in advance, and prices are typically at their highest. If you're planning to travel during this period, booking early is essential. 

May to August is widely regarded as the best time to visit South Africa for a safari, particularly if you have your sights set on Kruger National Park. In the northern safari areas of South Africa, dry winters cause vegetation to thin and limited natural water sources force wildlife to gather around rivers, dams and waterholes. This makes it much easier to spot iconic safari species, including lions, elephants, buffaloes and leopards. The thinner bush also allows for activities like walking safaris with cool mornings giving way to mild, sunny afternoons.

When winter arrives in the Western Cape, it brings with it cold temperatures and frequent rainfall. While you may need to plan some indoor activities, such as visiting the Aquarium or an  wine cellar, Cape Town is always worth including on your itinerary, with fewer tourists, plenty of excellent restaurants and seasonal whale watching beginning along parts of the southern coastline from around July. If you're looking for warm beach weather, however, you'll find better conditions during the summer months. 

March to April and September to October are some of the best months to visit South Africa if you're looking for a good balance of excellent safari conditions, pleasant weather and fewer crowds. These shoulder seasons sit between the peak summer holidays and the busy winter safari months, with good value options that don’t compromise on the experience. Wildlife viewing is generally good, particularly in late April as the bush begins to thin, while spring (from September onwards) offers warm temperatures and the possibility of seeing wild flowers but without soaring daytime temperatures.

Cape Town enjoys mild, comfortable weather that's ideal for sightseeing, wine tasting and hiking, without the festive season crowds of December and January. The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s best destinations at this time with reliably good weather, beautiful coastal scenery and plenty of outdoor activities. And along South Africa’s West Coast, wildflowers bloom in abundance come spring. Accommodation is also often more readily available than during peak season, giving you greater flexibility when planning your trip.

The main trade-off is that safari conditions aren't quite as predictable as the dry winter months, when wildlife gathers around shrinking water sources and sightings are at their easiest. Likewise, if you're hoping for guaranteed beach weather in Cape Town, summer remains the better option. However, if you're looking for a well-rounded South African holiday at a more relaxed pace, the shoulder seasons are hard to beat.
