Why choose Rwanda for a honeymoon safari

With two luxury lodges located on the outskirts of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, famed for its mountain gorillas, and a further two exclusive safari camps located in a private concession within the Big 5 safari area of Akagera National Park, Wilderness is able to offer a Rwandan safari honeymoon like no other, far removed from the crowds of other better-known safari areas.

Look forward to trekking together to spend a precious hour with a gorilla family, soak in your private hot tub while overlooking ancient volcanoes, then enjoy a traditional safari by game drive as you look for lions or rhinos, or boat on a luxury pontoon spotting elephants or even a fishing leopard. Plus, plenty of cultural, conservation and community experiences will create even more memories while strengthening your bond. Remote yet thoughtfully appointed, with award-winning luxury designs, your Rwandan honeymoon at any of our lodges combines comfort, privacy, and elegance.

A honeymoon safari in Rwanda is easily combined with a wild adventure in Tanzania or Kenya for an extended East African couple’s safari.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a honeymoon safari in Rwanda?

Rwanda is an excellent year-round destination for your safari honeymoon. The drier seasons from June to September and December to February offer the most comfortable conditions for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, with less mud on the forest trails and easier hiking. These are also excellent times for game drives and boat safaris in Akagera National Park, with wildlife often easier to spot around water sources. The wetter months of March to May and October to November usually bring some rainfall which can make trekking more challenging, but watching gorillas in the mist and rain is a poignant and surprisingly romantic experience.

What romantic experiences are available in Rwanda?

A honeymoon in Rwanda offers safari experiences that few places on Earth can match. The highlight is spending a precious hour with endangered mountain gorillas, while a range of other hikes, golden monkey trekking and cultural excursions can also be arranged. Back at your lodge close to Volcanoes National Park, enjoy cosy fireside evenings, exceptional dining, and opportunities to plant a tree together. Depending on your accommodation, you could also unwind with wellness treatments at The Sanctuary spa or together in your private hot tub.

In Akagera National Park’s exclusive Magashi Concession, your honeymoon will revolve around game drives and night drives in search of wildlife and scenic boat excursions with sunset cocktails on the lake. For a truly unforgettable evening, sleep beneath the stars in your own rooftop Star Bed.

How private are the camps in Rwanda?

If privacy is the most important aspect of your safari honeymoon, look no further than Rwanda. Our safari lodges here offer some of the most exclusive and intimate safari experiences in Africa. In Volcanoes National Park, a property like Wilderness Bisate Reserve has just four sublime villas, each measuring 212 square meters (over 2,200 square feet), offering a deeply personal and secluded honeymoon. Similarly, in Akagera National Park, Magashi Peninsula, features just two suites, positioned 200 m apart, with excellent views, and alfresco, rooftop beds and private plunge pools, ideal for couples, as well as an exclusive-use villa for those who want even more space – the only accommodation in a stretch of remote wilderness the size of Paris.

The Sanctuary at Bisate

The Sanctuary is Wilderness Bisate's dedicated wellness centre, opened in December 2025 at the forest edge of the Bisate Concession with direct views toward Mount Bisoke. Built from volcanic rock and locally sourced materials, its architecture draws the landscape inward – dark stone, warm timber, and woven textures that echo the lodge's Rwandan royal heritage. Designed around the rhythms of a gorilla trekking itinerary, The Sanctuary offers guests a space to decompress after long treks through steep montane terrain, combining contrast therapy, hydrotherapy, and body treatments in a setting that feels entirely rooted in place.

Magashi Peninsula Star Bed

Intimate. Luxurious. Wilderness. Deep inside Rwanda’s Akagera National Park is a stretch of virtually unexplored wilderness. Magashi Peninsula invites you to discover a place few have seen. This 4,287-hectare (10,590-acre) private wilderness features just two suites and one villa set at the furthest reaches of the park with its own exclusive piece of lake shoreline. A place where the rest of the world seems to disappear. This is best enjoyed from the Star Bed located on the roof of your suite.
